The Titans should sign this 34-Game starting edge rusher!

The Tennessee Titans were hit with a retirement on Tuesday, as veteran edge rusher Lorenzo Carter decided to call it a career after seven seasons.

Carter was set to compete for a roster spot in training camp and serve as a potential depth piece in Tennessee’s edge rusher. However, he opts for retirement instead, leaving a spot open on the roster for the Titans to add another pass rusher.

The free agency market is still filled with veteran edge rushers who could make an impact, such as Jadeveon Clowney and Za’Darius Smith. But I think general manager Mike Borgonzi should sign a former Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, and Dallas Cowboys pass rusher instead.

Titans should sign Carl Lawson

After an injury-riddled 2023 campaign with the Jets, which led to him getting released by the team, Lawson had a nice rebound season with the Cowboys in 2024.

Lawson posted five sacks and 27 quarterback pressures in 292 pass-rushing snaps in 2024. He also tallied ten defensive stops and four tackles for loss.

In 15 games last year, including three starts, Lawson showed he can still be an impactful rotational pass rusher. The 30-year-old would be a fantastic addition to the Titans’ edge rusher group and also be an upgrade over Carter in the depth role.

To top it all off, Lawson should be cheap to sign. Spotrac projects the Auburn product will land a two-year deal worth around $7.6 million, which is an average annual salary of $3.8 million. Tennessee can likely get him for cheaper than that.

Overall, Lawson isn’t a game-changing player, but he played well in a limited role with Dallas in 2024 and would provide adequate depth on the Titans’ defensive line.
